Ever wish you could spend time in Boston visiting Revolutionary War sights or in Rome soaking up Roman and Greek history? The Holy Land? Truth be told, there is great value in visiting historic sights wherever you are! Using the five senses to experience a glimpse of history as you stand in the spot where it happened provides an immersive learning opportunity like no other! As homeschoolers, a wonderful opportunity for our students is to spend time experiencing history in an immersive way - wherever we happen to be located on the globe.
Look around at the historic sights in your area and see what is available. Introduce the topic to your students at home and then GO to the sight. (We would make Tardis sounds, when we loaded up in the minivan, before we left the driveway on these trips!) Your very best resource is to talk to the Rangers or historic interpreters everywhere you go. They are experts on the time period represented and every single one we've ever encountered was thrilled to teach an impromptu, hands on class with our small group of kiddos. If a tour is offered, take it! Video presentation? Watch it! Scavenger hunt? Do it!
In the Houston area we are blessed to be in the cradle of Texas history! The history of Texas is an EPIC story! We had the pleasure of teaching Texas history to our homeschooled family through exploration and immersion. After many requests, I am pleased to begin offering Educational Trip Planning Guides for Texas time travel trips! Check out the first trip I'd recommend: Prehistory & First Peoples: Lufkin Area.
